I worked for Grain, a sustainable furniture startup, from 2020 to 2022. There, I worked with head designer Jamie Prow to develop a brand identity. I was responsible for producing our adverts, and managing our marketing alongside founder Tom Allen (not the comedian…).
It was a wild couple of years, working through COVID and really feeling like we were going to change the industry. I was the fifth employee, and over two years and two rounds of investment the company grew significantly, especially as everyone spruced up their homes during the pandemic.
All of our communication was about how transparent, ethical and environmentally friendly our products were, and we tried a whole range of campaigns to get that across. In the process, I became pretty comfortable with camera gear and editing softwares.
My favourite ads weren’t necessarily the most successful. Our ‘Responsible from Every Angle’ campaign was a highlight for me, although the concept might have been a little too elliptical for a 15 second instagram advert.
I was pleased too with our ‘designed for disassembly’ campaign, which set out to show how good our products were for renters who move frequently. We produced loads of different photo and video assets for this but this simple GIF is still my favourite.
Finally, there is this video, part of a set of assets we simply called our ‘brand introduction’. Since we were new on the scene, we were a new feature on a lot of people’s feeds. These assets set out to communicate our values while showing the quality of the products. And this video is probably one of my slickest motion graphics edits.
