Vertical video: Food delivery riders are living on the streets in London.
For Week 7, I produced a report on an issue that hasn’t been covered elsewhere. I noticed e-bikes parked outside rows of tents in underpasses in London and went to investigate.
I met two gig economy workers who live on the streets. We spoke for quite a while. One was a medical student from Paraguay. She had travelled to the UK to get a visa so she could travel on to Spain. She’d lived under an underpass in the City of London for 6 months.
I also met a man from Hungary. He’d been on the streets for years, and had been in the tunnel he was in now for two weeks. He was an alcoholic, who said that the loose structure of the gig economy enabled his alcoholism.
Both work incredibly hard. The woman does 12 hours of deliveries every day. When I met the man, he had just finished a 1am to 12pm shift.
Here’s the video I made for our Week 7 newsday at City University.
